Enable sim params to be settable through init

appel_c requested to merge fix/sim_params_settable_through_init into main

Description

This MR adds the option to init the sim params upon initialisation. It also changes the API for the sim module, but keeps backwards compatibility for the moment. This should be removed once the BEC core code is adapted -> #80 (closed)
